Renoir Paintings

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is a famous French artist from the Impressionist era of the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was integral in the development of this new art movement, which was to be crucial in the development towards the contemporary art styles that we have today.

The beauty that lied in Renoir's oil paintings were the use of color and vibrancy which drew fans from Europe and America as well as help provide the basis from which the impressionist movement grew. Renoir would also capture his subjects, when as portraits, in personal and interesting situations, a little like a skilled photographer of the modern era. This gave his paintings great character. Great examples of this are three of his finest works - Bal du moulin de la Galette, 1876, Luncheon of the Boating Party, 1880 and The Theater Box, 1874.

Renoir first experienced fame and fortune when six of his paintings were placed in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, which was an historic event, and important in the progress of art. In the same year two of his works were shown with Durand-Ruel in London. Renoir was to continuously change direction throughout his career, becoming an efficient artist, with several thousand paintings in total by the time of his death.

Renoir has since become one of the most respected French artists of all time and his work continues to gain fans around the world, particularly in Europe and America. Along with the likes of Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin and Cassatt, this artist will be remembered for a very long time.
